About the Book

Luckier Than Most is the story of Harry D. White. He’s part of a generation born in the decade following World War I, who spent their childhood in great poverty and then, while still in their teens, were sent off to distant lands to fight in the next world war. Raised during the Great Depression, Harry and his family struggled to find a better life, desperately in search of the American Dream and a place to call home.

Uprooted 19 times by the age of 16, Harry’s childhood was spent on freight trains and hitchhiking back and forth across country, being sent out to beg for food to feed his family, working the fields of California and living out in the open under an old oak tree.

His determination to distance himself from an unhappy childhood led him to a life in the United States Army and into two war zones (World War II and the Korean Conflict). Harry’s decades-long career in bomb disposal and the U.S. Army Infantry exposed him to more danger than one can imagine. But when it mattered most, good training, luck and God always seemed to be on his side.

Reading Harry’s story – which in many ways is his generation’s story – you’ll realize why Tom Brokaw called this “The Greatest Generation.

5-starIf ever there were a book to lift the spirits in what we now see are hard times economically and socially and environmentally and globally this is that book. White is a never say die guy who in the face of a life of hardship and hard knocks managed to stay sunny side up.

5-starI could not put this book down. It meant a lot to me because my family and husband’s family lived at this time. We also had roots in some of the same cities. It was about the most courageous and good human being. Truly an inspiring book.

About the Author

Dad Cover-Final ShotHarry D. White was born in Big Spring, Texas on March 5, 1925. He spent his first 16 years on freight trains and hitchhiking back and forth across the country with his family, searching for the American Dream.

By the age of 20, Harry had joined the United States Army and was serving in World War II, launching what would become his distinguished decades-long career in bomb disposal.

He found his soulmate in his wife Barbara who he was married to for more than 60 years. Through his relationship with Barbara and together raising their four children, he found his “happily ever after.”

In retirement, Harry got the dog he had always wanted. Soon afterward, he found a new way to give back to his community by making sure that others were able to enjoy the companionship of their dog as much as he had. That’s why he spent more than 19 years serving as a TDI (Therapy Dogs International) Evaluator as well as offering free dog training classes.

They say everyone has a book inside them. Harry certainly did. At the urging of his children, he decided to put his story down on paper. The result is the Amazon five star rated book “Luckier than Most.
